What IELTS score do you need for Central Michigan University?

For regular admission CMU accepts TOEFL 79 (550 paper), IELTS 6.5, PTE 53, Duolingo 100, Michigan English Test 52, IB Higher Level English at grade 5, AP English Language or Literature at 4, a GCSE English Language A or B, SAT EBRW 520, ACT English 21 or ELS Level 112. See determining English proficiency.

CMU also accepts successful completion of a course of study, such as a high school diploma or a bachelor's degree, at a recognised institution where the language of instruction is English, or 24 or more graded academic credits with a 2.50 GPA at such an institution. The page does not name India or Pakistan, so if your degree was taught in English, ask International Recruitment (isr@cmich.edu) whether it qualifies.

The graduate application page lists TOEFL-exempt countries, including Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda and the UK. India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh are not on it.

Some programs admit below the regular bar. The MS in Administration asks for IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 79 or PTE 53 for regular admission, and IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 61 or PTE 44 for admission with stipulations. Check your own program's page.

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement CMU sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the CMU English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
