PTE Academic to IELTS concordance table

The table below shows the PTE Academic score range that concords to each IELTS band, for the overall score and for each skill. PTE is used as the reference scale because it is more granular.

IELTS's own table: a different bar, skill by skill

The IELTS Partners publish their own comparison. Its overall scores sit inside Pearson's ranges, but skill by skill it asks for more in listening and reading, far more in writing, and less in speaking: IELTS 7.0 is PTE writing 82 on IELTS's table against 69–76 on Pearson's, and speaking 65 against 76–82. The two tables give a different IELTS band for 30 of the 67 PTE scores from 24 to 90.

Frequently asked questions

What PTE score is equivalent to IELTS 7.0?

According to Pearson's official concordance, an IELTS overall band of 7.0 concords to a PTE Academic overall score of 63–70. A PTE score of 65, for example, is equivalent to IELTS 7.0.

What PTE score equals IELTS 6.5?

An IELTS overall band of 6.5 concords to a PTE Academic overall score of 55–62. A PTE 58 is broadly equivalent to IELTS 6.5.

Why do PTE to IELTS tables disagree?

There are two official comparisons. Pearson's July 2025 concordance for the enhanced PTE Academic, and the IELTS Partners' own study on ielts.org. They put IELTS 7.0 at PTE 63–70 and PTE 66.3 respectively, and differ most in writing, where IELTS asks for PTE 82 against Pearson's 69–76. Universities and visa bodies publish their own PTE minimums, which is the number to meet.

What PTE score does IELTS say equals IELTS 7.0?

The IELTS Partners' table puts IELTS 7.0 at PTE 66.3 overall, so 67 as a whole score, with listening 66, reading 68, speaking 65 and writing 82.
