Is PTE 72 a good score?
IELTS 7.5 describes a good user with occasional slips. It comfortably clears most postgraduate programmes and many professional bodies that ask for 7.0 in each skill. Because 72 is at the bottom of the 7.5 range, a bad day drops you to IELTS 7.0; treat 75 as the safe target.

IELTS's own table says 7.0, not 7.5
There are two official comparisons. Pearson published its concordance for the enhanced PTE Academic in July 2025; the IELTS Partners publish their own study on ielts.org. They disagree on PTE 72: Pearson maps it to IELTS 7.5, IELTS to 7.0. The gap is widest in writing, where IELTS asks for a much higher PTE score; in speaking it asks for less.
