Opinion (agree or disagree)

  1. 1State a clear position in the last sentence of the introduction and keep it to the end.
  2. 2Two body paragraphs that each give one reason for that position, with an example.
  3. 3A partial position is fine if it is stated precisely; a position that drifts is what caps task response at 6.

Discussion (both views and your opinion)

  1. 1Give each view its own paragraph, explained fairly even where you disagree.
  2. 2Say where you stand in the introduction and again in the conclusion; the question asks for your opinion.
  3. 3Do not merge the two views into one paragraph; examiners look for both to be developed.

Advantages and disadvantages

  1. 1If the question says outweigh, decide which side wins and say so in the introduction.
  2. 2One paragraph for advantages, one for disadvantages, each with a concrete example.
  3. 3The conclusion must give the verdict; listing both sides without one loses task response.

Problem and solution

  1. 1Name one or two specific problems, not a general complaint.
  2. 2Match each solution to a problem and say who would carry it out.
  3. 3Keep problems and solutions in separate paragraphs so the structure is visible.

Two-part question

  1. 1Answer the first question in body paragraph one and the second in body paragraph two.
  2. 2Signpost each with the question's own words so the examiner can tick both parts.
  3. 3Missing either part caps task response at 5, however good the language.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should an IELTS Task 2 essay be?+

At least 250. The samples here are 270 to 300 words, which is enough to develop two body paragraphs without adding errors. Essays under 250 words are penalised.

Are these essays Band 9?+

They are written to Band 8 descriptors: a clear position throughout, one central idea per paragraph, a range of structures with few errors. Band 9 asks for fully flexible, precise language; the difference is rarely worth chasing under exam time.

Can I memorise a sample essay for the exam?+

No. Memorised essays that do not answer the exact question score below 5 on task response. Use the plans to see how each question type is structured, then write your own under 40 minutes and get it scored.
