Is PTE 48 a good score?
IELTS 6.0 describes a competent user. It is a common entry point for undergraduate courses, foundation years and the Competent English level for several Australian visa streams. Because 48 is at the bottom of the 6.0 range, a bad day drops you to IELTS 5.5; treat 51 as the safe target.

IELTS's own table says 5.5, not 6.0
There are two official comparisons. Pearson published its concordance for the enhanced PTE Academic in July 2025; the IELTS Partners publish their own study on ielts.org. They disagree on PTE 48: Pearson maps it to IELTS 6.0, IELTS to 5.5. The gap is widest in writing, where IELTS asks for a much higher PTE score; in speaking it asks for less.
