What 6.5 actually requires
The overall band is the average of the four modules rounded to the nearest half band, so 6.5 needs an average of 6.25 or above: for example listening 7, reading 6.5, writing 6, speaking 6 gives 6.375, which rounds to 6.5. The rounding rule is on ielts.org. Because listening and reading move faster with practice, the efficient plan pushes those to 7 while writing and speaking reach the 6.0 floor.
Weeks 1 to 4: listening and reading to 6.5
Listening: band 6 is 23 correct, band 7 is 30. The gain is in Parts 3 and 4 and in careless spelling and plural errors; one Part 3 and one Part 4 a day with transcript review. Reading: band 6 is 23 correct, band 7 is 30. Do the ordered question types first, matching tasks last, 20 minutes per passage without exception.

Weeks 5 to 9: writing to 6.0, speaking to 6.0
Writing at 5.5 usually means the position is unclear and errors are in most sentences. Two essays a week, each scored on the four criteria, rewriting the one with the lowest grammar score error-free. Use short sentences until the error rate falls, then add complexity. Speaking at 5.5 means short answers and long pauses. Record two-minute Part 2 answers daily and count restarts; answer every Part 1 question in three sentences with a reason and an example.
Weeks 10 to 12: full mocks and the booking decision
One full scored mock a week. If two consecutive mocks show 6.5 overall with nothing below 6.0, book the test for two to three weeks out. If writing is stuck at 5.5, keep the other three at 7 and 6.5 and consider whether your offer allows a One Skill Retake for writing after the main test. Universities accept results for two years, so the test date can precede the offer.
