Band 8 sample answer

Band 8275 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

I'd like to talk about a five-minute animated short I stumbled across about two years ago on a popular video-sharing platform. I was just unwinding in my flat on a rainy Sunday evening, mindlessly scrolling through recommended videos, when a link shared by an old university friend caught my eye. The thumbnail looked striking, so I decided to give it a go.

The animation had no spoken dialogue at all, relying purely on evocative visuals and a haunting piano score. It depicted a solitary little robot wandering through a desolate, grey wasteland, diligently collecting discarded plant seeds from piles of electronic waste. Day after day, it faced harsh dust storms and mechanical breakdowns, yet it persevered until it managed to nurture a single green sapling beneath a makeshift glass dome.

To be honest, what drew me in initially was just the sheer artistic quality, the hand-drawn textures and subtle lighting were breathtaking. But as the narrative unfolded, the underlying message became crystal clear. It was a poignant commentary on environmental degradation and the power of individual persistence. Even in a seemingly hopeless situation, deliberate care and patience could restore life.

The film resonated with me far more than I expected. In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by global issues like climate change, feeling as though individual efforts are essentially pointless. Watching this tiny character relentlessly protect something fragile reminded me that small, conscious actions still count. It actually prompted me to be much more mindful about recycling and cutting down on unnecessary consumption in my own daily routine. It's rare for such a brief video to leave that kind of lasting impression.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe a short animated film with a message"?+

Note down the visual style and plot (e.g. silent robot, wasteland, planting seeds)

How long should I speak on an IELTS cue card?+

You get one minute to prepare, then speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

How is the cue card scored?+

Part 2 is not scored on its own. Your whole Speaking test gets one band from four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The cue card is where the examiner hears whether you can keep going for two minutes.

Can I use this sample answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
