Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my views regarding the current state of shopping facilities in our neighbourhood. As a long-term resident, I frequently visit our local high street and believe it is important to share my observations.

I generally appreciate the variety of independent retailers we have, which gives our area a unique character. The convenience of having essential services within walking distance is a significant asset to our community and fosters a sense of local connection that is often missing in larger, sterile shopping centres.

However, the current facilities are increasingly inadequate. Specifically, there is a severe lack of bicycle racks, forcing cyclists to chain their bikes to lamp posts, which creates clutter on the pavement. Furthermore, the public seating areas are dilapidated and often occupied by litter, making them unwelcoming for elderly shoppers who need to rest.

To improve these conditions, the council should install modern, secure cycle stands at key intersections. Additionally, a scheduled cleaning programme for public benches and the installation of more accessible waste bins would greatly enhance the overall experience for everyone. I hope these suggestions will be considered to revitalise our local shopping district.

Yours faithfully,

Jonathan Miller

Examiner's view

Why this scores well

A Band 8 response fully addresses all three bullet points with specific, relevant suggestions while maintaining a consistently formal tone appropriate for a newspaper editor. A common Band 6 mistake is failing to provide concrete suggestions, instead offering vague complaints without proposing actionable improvements for the council.

  • →Write to an organisation or someone you do not know: open with Dear Sir or Madam, close with Yours faithfully.
  • →If you know the person's surname, use Dear Mr or Ms and close with Yours sincerely.
  • →No contractions, no slang; polite indirect requests such as I would be grateful if you could.
