IELTS Speaking Part 1: Recycling questions and answers

Recycling questions with sample answers

1

Do you often recycle things at home?

Yes, definitely. In my flat, we have separate bins for plastic, paper, and general waste, so it is quite straightforward. I always make sure to rinse out milk cartons and food containers before chucking them into the recycling.

2

What kinds of things do you usually recycle?

Mostly everyday packaging like cardboard boxes from home deliveries, glass jars, and aluminium cans. I also try to take worn-out batteries to a collection box at my local supermarket, as you should not just bin them with standard household rubbish.

3

Did your family recycle when you were a child?

Not really, to be honest. Back then, people were not nearly as mindful about waste, so everything pretty much went into one single dustbin. I only started getting into the habit when my primary school launched a paper-saving campaign.

4

Do you think recycling is easy to do where you live?

Overall, yes, because the local council provides colour-coded wheelie bins and collects them every fortnight. Having said that, it can be a bit of a hassle if you have bulky items like old electronics, since the nearest amenity site is quite far.

5

Would you like to recycle more things in the future?

I suppose so, especially old clothes and textiles. At the moment, I tend to hoard worn-out t-shirts or use them as cleaning rags, but I would love to see more convenient drop-off points for fabric recycling in my neighbourhood.

Details are invented. Use the shape, not the sentences: examiners mark memorised answers down.

Two or three sentences, about 15 to 20 seconds: a direct answer, a reason and one detail. One-word answers cost fluency marks, and long speeches eat into the examiner's time.
