The question

The diagram shows the components of a neuron and how it works.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Components and functional mechanism of a neuron
  1. 1.Dendrites receive messages from other cells
  2. 2.Cell body processes the incoming information
  3. 3.Action potential travels as an electrical signal down the axon
  4. 4.Myelin sheath speeds up the transmission of the neural impulse
  5. 5.Terminal buttons form junctions with other cells to pass the message

Band 8 sample answer

Band 8179 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided diagram illustrates the primary components of a neuron and the functional process through which neural signals are transmitted. Overall, the structure consists of several distinct parts that work in sequence to facilitate communication between cells, with the action potential serving as the core mechanism for signal propagation.

At the receiving end, dendrites function as the entry point, capturing messages from other cells. These signals are then processed by the cell body, also known as the soma. Once a signal is initiated, it travels as an action potential down the axon. This transmission is significantly enhanced by the myelin sheath, which covers segments of the axon to increase the speed of the neural impulse.

Finally, the signal reaches the terminal buttons, which are responsible for forming junctions with other cells. This allows the message to be passed on to subsequent neurons, muscles, or glands. The diagram also highlights that the entire process is cyclical, as the terminal buttons of one neuron connect to the dendrites of another, thereby creating a continuous network for neural communication throughout the body.

How to write about process diagrams: tips and vocabulary

  • →Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends.
  • →Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally.
  • →Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
  • facilitate

to make a process or action easier

  • propagation

the action of spreading or transmitting something

  • sequential

following a logical order or a sequence

  • subsequent

coming after something in time or order

  • enhanced

to increase or further improve the quality

  • cyclical

occurring in cycles or repeating patterns

Frequently asked questions

What should the overview say?+

The diagram illustrates the anatomy of a neuron and the sequential process by which electrical signals are transmitted from one cell to another.

How many words and how long for IELTS Writing Task 1?+

At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.

How is IELTS Writing Task 1 scored?+

On four criteria: task achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical range and accuracy. A clear overview of the main features is what most separates Band 6 from Band 7 and above.

How do I describe process diagrams?+

Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally. Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
