Band 8 sample answer

Band 8185 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The table illustrates the average monthly precipitation in five major cities: Hongkong, Tokyo, Jakarta, Cairo, and London. Overall, the cities exhibit distinct rainfall patterns, with Hongkong and Jakarta showing the most extreme fluctuations, while London and Cairo represent the most stable and driest climates, respectively.

Hongkong experiences a dramatic surge in rainfall during the summer months, peaking at 380mm in August, before plummeting to a low of 24mm in January. Similarly, Tokyo sees its highest rainfall in June at 190mm, though its distribution is more balanced than Hongkong's. Conversely, Jakarta follows an inverse pattern, with heavy rainfall at the start and end of the year, reaching 300mm in both January and February, while dropping to a minimum of 60mm in August.

In stark contrast, Cairo is exceptionally arid, recording almost no rainfall for much of the year, with a negligible peak of 27mm in August. London presents a different profile, maintaining a relatively consistent level of precipitation throughout the year, fluctuating only between 45mm in July and 80mm in January. While Hongkong and Jakarta experience significant seasonal shifts, London’s rainfall remains remarkably steady by comparison.
