Band 8 sample answer

Band 8184 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided charts illustrate the disparities in educational attainment, scientific personnel, and research expenditure between developing and industrialised countries over the decade from 1980 to 1990.

Overall, industrialised nations maintained a substantial lead in all categories. While education and scientific staffing levels grew in both groups, research spending followed divergent paths, increasing sharply in industrialised countries while declining in developing ones.

Regarding education, the average years of schooling in industrialised countries rose from 8.5 years in 1980 to 10.5 years in 1990. Developing countries also saw an increase, albeit from a much lower base of 2.5 to 3.2 years. Similarly, the number of scientists and technicians per 1000 people in industrialised nations surged from 43 to 70, whereas developing countries experienced more modest growth, rising from 11 to 16 per 1000 people.

In terms of financial commitment, spending on research and development in industrialised countries more than doubled, climbing from US $160 billion to US $350 billion. Conversely, developing countries saw their investment in this sector drop from US $55 billion in 1980 to US $30 billion by 1990, highlighting a growing technological divide.
