Although multi-level commercial structures were technically feasible in the nineteenth century, upper floors remained unpopular due to laborious stair climbing. The invention of an automatic braking mechanism transformed passenger safety and vertical transport. Consequently, top storeys became premium real estate rather than undesirable spaces reserved for low-rent tenants.
