Can you take the PTE exam at home?

No. Every PTE test, including PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Core and PTE Home, is taken on a computer at an authorised Pearson test centre. Pearson says this keeps every test secure and fair for test takers and the organisations that accept PTE. What you can do at home is prepare: Pearson's Scored Practice Tests and free Smart Prep materials run online.

What Pearson says

Pearson's PTE Academic UKVI FAQ: "Like all PTE tests, PTE Academic UKVI is taken at an authorized PTE test center, on a computer", and it cannot be taken at home (Pearson). The PTE Academic FAQ says you attend a secure Pearson test centre and use a computer and headset (Pearson).

Pearson's test-day page covers all PTE tests the same way: about 10–15 people testing together, two hours for PTE Academic, Academic UKVI or Core, and 30 minutes for PTE Home (Pearson).

Why a centre

Centres let Pearson check ID and take a photo, signature and palm vein scan, record video and audio throughout, and keep personal items locked away (security policy; test centre rules). See PTE test day rules for what to expect.

Pearson lists test centres in over 115 countries; find yours through its test finder or our country guides, such as PTE test centres in India.

What you can do at home

Practise. The official Scored Practice Test is a two-hour, at-home mock using real past questions and the real scoring engine, but its score is unofficial (Pearson). Smart Prep in myPTE has free Guided Practice Tests, video courses and a study plan. See PTE Scored Practice Test.

If you need an at-home test

IELTS offers IELTS Online, taken at home with a remote proctor, in some countries. It is not available for UK visa tests. Check that your university accepts it before booking; see IELTS Online vs computer vs paper.

For visa purposes, an at-home test is rarely an option. Always check the test list on the official visa page before booking anything.
