Band 8 sample answer

Band 8272 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

I would like to talk about my uncle, David, who is easily the most serene and grounded individual I have ever met. He is in his late sixties now and lives in a small cottage just outside Edinburgh, where he spends most of his retirement pottering around his garden and restoring old wooden furniture.

I have known him all my life, obviously, but I really started to appreciate his tranquil nature during my university years. Whenever family gatherings became a bit chaotic or heated, David was always the eye of the storm. He speaks in a measured, gentle tone, and he never interrupts anyone. Even when unexpected mishaps occur, like when a water pipe burst at a family gathering a couple of winters ago, he did not panic in the slightest. Instead, he just took a deep breath, fetched a wrench, and calmly set about sorting it out without any fuss.

What really sets him apart is his ability to genuinely listen. In a world where people are constantly rushing and checking their mobile phones, uncle David gives you his undivided attention. There is no sense of urgency around him, and he has this unshakeable composure that tends to rub off on everyone nearby.

I think the main reason I feel so soothed in his company is that he creates a completely judgement-free atmosphere. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by work deadlines or personal worries, popping over to his place for a cup of tea instantly lowers my stress levels. Being around someone who is entirely comfortable with silence and so unbothered by life's petty annoyances always puts everything into perspective for me.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start the cue card "Describe someone with a calm personality"?+

Identify someone specific and jot down a couple of distinct visual or behavioural traits.

How long should I speak on an IELTS cue card?+

You get one minute to prepare, then speak for the full two minutes, about 220 to 280 words at a natural pace. The examiner will stop you at two minutes, which is a good sign, not a problem.

How is the cue card scored?+

Part 2 is not scored on its own. Your whole Speaking test gets one band from four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. The cue card is where the examiner hears whether you can keep going for two minutes.

Can I use this sample answer in the exam?+

Use its structure and vocabulary, not its sentences. Examiners recognise memorised answers and mark fluency down; a shorter answer from your own memory scores higher than a recited one.
