Model answer

Band 8 sample answer

Band 8183 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided charts illustrate the global distribution of water and compare how it is utilised across three distinct nations. Overall, it is evident that only a tiny fraction of the world's water is fresh, with the majority of this being inaccessible as frozen ice. Furthermore, water consumption priorities differ markedly between the selected countries.

Regarding global water, 97.5% is saline, leaving only 2.5% as fresh water. Within this fresh water category, 69.8% is stored as frozen glaciers and permanent snows, while 29.9% exists as underground water. Only a negligible 0.3% is classified as fresh renewable water, with 0.9% identified as underground ice.

In terms of water usage, Egypt and Saudi Arabia rely heavily on agriculture, which accounts for 40% and 50% of their respective consumption. Conversely, Canada uses only 30% for agriculture, prioritising industry at 44%. Domestic use is highest in Canada at 18%, compared to 10% in Egypt and 7% in Saudi Arabia. Industrial water use is lowest in Egypt at 7%, whereas Saudi Arabia uses 18% for industrial purposes. These figures highlight the contrast between agricultural-focused economies and more industrialised nations.
