Model answer

Band 8 sample answer

Band 8186 words. Every figure in the answer comes from the chart above.

The provided diagram illustrates the geological process behind the formation of the Hawaiian island chain located in the Pacific Ocean. It highlights the interaction between a stationary magma plume and the movement of the Pacific tectonic plate.

Overall, the formation of these islands is driven by volcanic activity originating from a deep-seated hot spot. As the Pacific plate moves steadily over this stationary source of magma, a series of volcanic islands is created, with the age of these landmasses increasing as they move further from the active site.

The process begins at a depth of 2883 km, where a magma plume rises to the surface. This creates the youngest volcano, which is built up through repeated eruptions on the Pacific plate. Because the plate shifts at a rate of 7-9 cm per year, the volcanic structures are gradually carried away from the hot spot. Consequently, the islands located further along the chain are significantly older, with the oldest volcano dating back 80 million years. The inset map identifies the major islands, including Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, which represent different stages of this long-term volcanic development.

Frequently asked questions

What should the overview say?+

The diagram illustrates that the Hawaiian islands are formed by a stationary magma plume beneath a shifting tectonic plate, resulting in a chain of volcanoes that vary significantly in age.

How many words and how long for IELTS Writing Task 1?+

At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.

How is IELTS Writing Task 1 scored?+

On four criteria: task achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical range and accuracy. A clear overview of the main features is what most separates Band 6 from Band 7 and above.

How do I describe mixed charts?+

Write one overview sentence that links the two visuals. Give each visual its own detail paragraph. Point out where one chart explains the other.
