Core and Academic serve different decisions

IRCC lists PTE Core for Express Entry. Do not substitute PTE Academic or convert an Academic score through an IELTS comparison table. For other immigration routes, verify the route’s own accepted evidence.

Admission and a study permit are separate decisions. Check the named course’s accepted test and each-skill requirements, then check IRCC’s permit instructions. The Student Direct Stream closed on 8 November 2024; do not plan a new application around its former score rules.

Set a target for every PTE Core skill

Use the four-skill calculator below to find each CLB level and the gap to your target. An overall PTE score or an average of CLB levels can hide a skill that falls short.

Express Entry requirements vary: Federal Skilled Worker needs CLB 7 in all four skills for the first official language; Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 or CLB 5 for TEER 2/3; Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 in speaking/listening and CLB 4 in reading/writing. Other eligibility conditions also apply.

CLB 9 is relevant to some skill-transferability factors, while first-official-language core CRS points continue increasing at CLB 10. Reaching a language target does not guarantee selection.

Frequently asked questions

Can PTE Academic replace PTE Core for Express Entry?+

Which skill should I practise first?+

Compare each score with your chosen target, then review the skills that fall short. Keep practising the other skills too; the calculator does not predict preparation time or an official result.
