How PTE Describe Image is scored
- •Three traits: Content, Pronunciation (0–5) and Oral Fluency (0–5).
- •PTE Academic scores Content 0–6. The top band describes the image fully and accurately and expands on the relationships between its features, so a listener could build a complete mental picture. A human expert reviews Content before the score is final.
- •PTE Core scores Content 0–5. The top band covers all the elements of the image, their relationships, and a possible development, conclusion or implication.
- •A list of disconnected points scores low, and so does memorised material that does not deal with the image in front of you.

Tips
PTE Describe Image tips and tricks
- 1
Use the 25 seconds to find the main feature: the largest share, the clearest trend, the biggest contrast or the first and last stage.
- 2
Open with one sentence saying what the image shows, including its subject and units.
- 3
Give two or three key features with figures, and compare them: higher than, twice as many, while.
- 4
Finish with a conclusion or implication: what the image suggests overall.
- 5
Keep talking at a steady pace for about 35 seconds. A small slip is cheaper than a long pause or a restart.

What is Describe Image in PTE?+
A speaking task in both PTE Academic and PTE Core: an image such as a graph, chart, table, map or process appears, you get 25 seconds to study it and 40 seconds to describe it in detail.
How many Describe Image questions are in the PTE test?+
Five or six in PTE Academic and three or four in PTE Core, according to Pearson's Score Guides.
How long should I speak in Describe Image?+
You have 40 seconds. Strong answers use most of them: about 70–90 words at a natural pace, finishing before the recording stops.
Do I need to mention every number?+
No. Pearson's top Content band asks for the main features and the relationships between them, so pick the highest, lowest and biggest changes and compare them.
Can I use a template?+
A simple structure (what it shows, key features, conclusion) helps. Memorised sentences that do not describe this image score low on Content, and in PTE Academic a human expert reviews Content.
Where can I practise Describe Image with answers?+
Question 1 of every set on this page is free with the real timers, a sample answer and key points. With a free account, the BandLadder app's question bank adds a BandLadder AI score for content, pronunciation and oral fluency, within the free plan's limits.
